Joleen Mataele, the main protagonist in the film Leitis in Waiting, will speak at the 2019 Isabelle Lake Memorial Lecture to be held on IDaHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia), 17 May at The University of Western Australia (UWA).

Each year on IDaHOBIT UWA and the Commission co-host the Isabelle Lake Memorial Lecture in memory of young trans activist Isabelle Lake, who passed away in 2012 following her battle with leukaemia and to raise public awareness about gender spectrum issues.

This year the lecture will explore transgender issues from the Tongan cultural perspective as Joleen shares her experience as a transgender woman growing up and living in Tonga.
