Discrimination & bullying in schools project
Under the Equal Opportunity Act 1984, gender history discrimination and sexual orientation discrimination are unlawful.
In 2010, the Equal Opportunity Commission consulted with key stakeholders and facilitated the establishment of a Steering Committee and a Working Group including representatives from the Department of Education, Independent Schools Association, Catholic Education, the State School Teacher’s Union of WA and the sexuality and gender diverse community.
This project aims to develop a coordinated strategy to systematically address gender and sexuality based bullying and discrimination experienced by students in schools.
The goal is to create a safe environment for sexuality and gender diverse students in WA schools without compromising their learning opportunities.
A report on discrimination and bullying on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity in Western Australian education prepared for the WA Equal Opportunity Commission by Dr Tiffany Jones.
