While Western Australia’s population is approximately 50% men and 50% women, when it comes to local government, the latest FACTBase report released by the Committee for Perth has found that women are severely under-represented in the level of government closest to the community. The figures are even worse when the senior positions in local government such as Mayors, CEO’s, General Managers and Directors are examined.
“In overall terms, the proportion of women elected to local councils across WA between 1999 and 2013 was 31.6%. There has been a slight increase in the proportion of women working in local government, increasing from 29.2% in 1999 to 32.5% in 2013.
