Training for community organisations, schools and the community

Community Engagement and Education

The Human Rights Community Education Program broad aim is to build awareness and understanding about human rights and skills in exercising those rights in Western Australia across a diverse range of communities.

The Commission provides rights-based education services for community members, community workers and organisations.

A key focus of the rights-based program is to work in partnership with not for profit community organisation to empower those
groups who are most likely to experience discrimination, harassment and vilification.
The key objectives are for people:
*  to know their rights,
*  to develop skills in asserting these rights and
*  to work with communities to develop their own solutions.

The Commission, on request, can provide community information sessions, forums and workshops for
people with whom you work.

All community education and engagement forums can be designed to focus on a range
of human rights issues affecting:
*  People with disabilities,
*  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,
*  ethnic and religious minority groups,
*  gay, lesbian, bi-sexual & transgender and intersex communities,
*  young people,
*  seniors,
*  women & men.

Social and community services sector

The Commission delivers a range of training and information sessions for community organisations that  provide advocacy and information services relating to equal opportunity.

These sessions can range from the role of the Equal Opportunity Commission, its functions, meaning of unlawful discrimination, now policies, procedures and practises may constitute discrimination, through to the processes of handling or responding to a complaint.

The Commission's fee-for-service program is also available for community organisations which require education and training on the general application of equal opportunity law for their staff.  Consideration will be given to a fee reduction for community organisations, subject to the nature, size and capacity to pay for training.  To apply for a fee reduction, please complete the Fee Reduction Form (pdf) (Word) and forward it to the Commission.

Conferences and meetings

If your organisation is planning a conference, meeting or forum, or a broader community workshop, we can arrange to participate and and present an information session on the role and function of the Equal Opportunity Commission.

For all enquiries regarding training please contact the Manager, Community Education and Training.
